This Week in the ABC: Theatre Nights, Apple Picking and a Weekend Run

Your guide to what's happening across Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon this week — theatre, running, family science and a taste of autumn at Ardress House.

What's On in Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon: 21–27 September

There's a good spread on offer across the ABC area this week, from an evening at the theatre in Armagh to a family day out among the orchards near Loughgall. Whether you're after something energetic, something cultural, or just a good excuse to get out of the house, here's what's worth knowing about between Monday 21 and Sunday 27 September.

A busy week at the Market Place

The Market Place Theatre in Armagh is the place to be for four different nights this week. Things open on Tuesday 22 September with an NT Live screening of The Misanthrope — a great option if you enjoy big stage productions but don't fancy the trip to Belfast. Thursday 24 September brings Last of the Red Hot Lovers, and Friday 25 September offers a choice of two very different nights out: The Viper Club or The Kilkennys in Concert. The week wraps up on Saturday 26 September with another double-bill — The Bjorn Identity and The Twits — so there's something for date night and family night alike.

Coffee for a cause

Friday 25 September is the official date for Macmillan's World's Biggest Coffee Morning, and local groups, businesses and workplaces across Portadown, Armagh and beyond are expected to host their own events in support. If your workplace or community group is putting one on, it's well worth flagging to neighbours — keep an eye on local Facebook pages for details of what's happening near you.

On your feet — running near Portadown

For the more energetic among us, the Annaghmore Running Festival takes place on Saturday 26 September at Annaghmore Community Hall, near Portadown. There's something for every level, from a 1K family fun run right through to 5K, 10K, half marathon and a full 18-mile challenge.

Science, stargazing and Oktoberfest

Families looking for a weekend activity should head to the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, where the Institute of Biomedical Science's mobile Learning Lab visits on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September, 10am–5pm both days. Expect hands-on microscopy, virtual reality and even a bit of DNA science — included as part of the normal Planetarium visit.

Adults after something a little different can head to the Seagoe Hotel in Portadown on Saturday 26 September for an Oktoberfest-themed bottomless brunch, running 2pm–4pm with food, cocktails, live music and games.

Apple Sunday at Ardress House

Our pick of the weekend is Apple Sunday at Ardress House on Sunday 27 September, 11am–5pm. It's a celebration of County Armagh's orchard heritage, with the chance to learn about local apple growing, try your hand at the apple press, sample local cider and — depending on availability — pick your own apples. A proper autumn day out for the whole family.

A new six-week MUGA sports programme for young people also gets under way on Monday 21 September, running free at venues across the borough — worth watching for parents looking for something active for the kids after school.

Cú Roí MacDara Comes Home to Eamhain Mhacha

Foinse in performance of Cú Roí MacDara, © Muireann McCoyA Kerry theatre company is bringing an Irish myth back to the place where it begins. On Tuesday 27 October, Foinse perform their new drama Cú Roí MacDara at the Navan Centre, in the shadow of ancient Eamhain Mhacha.Quick factsDate: Tuesday 27 October 2026Doors: 6.30pmStart: 7pm (runs about 70 minutes)Venue: Navan Centre, Armagh (indoors)Tickets: £19, from the Navan Centre box office or Foinse.netParking: Free, on siteSuitable for: Adults, and children from 8What is Cú Roí MacDara?Cú Roí MacDara is a new version of an old Irish myth. Cúchulainn, the hero of Ulster, sets out to rescue his romantic partner from an enchanted mountain in Kerry, where she is held by a druid king.Foinse, a theatre group based in Kerry, have written an original script and original music for the show, and many of the songs are in Irish. They have performed it all over the country, including at the summit of Caherconree in Kerry for the summer solstice. Now they bring it to Armagh, where the story begins. Foinse at the fortress near the summit of Caherconree, Camp, Kerry, © Dan DevaneWriter Jonathan O'Leary explains the setting: "This intriguing myth is set in the home of the two rival heroes, Cuchulainn at Eamhain Mhacha and Cu Roí Mac Daire's fort at the top of the mountain of Caherconree in Kerry." Having performed on location at Caherconree, the company says it will be "honoured to bring the show to the other sacred site Eamhain Mhacha for Samhain."When and where is it on?The performance is on Tuesday 27 October 2026 at the Navan Centre, on the edge of Navan Fort outside Armagh. Doors open at 6.30pm and the show starts at 7pm. It runs for about 70 minutes, so expect to be out by roughly 8.10pm.How much are tickets?Tickets are £19. You can book through the Navan Centre's online box office or on the Foinse event page. More about the company is on the Foinse website. Is it suitable for children? The production is aimed at adults, but Foinse say children from 8 will enjoy it. It's lively and dramatic, with magic, music, physical storytelling, larger-than-life characters and a heroic storyline.Do I need to understand Irish? No. Many of the songs are in Irish, but a programme brochure includes translations, and the show is designed so that audiences without Irish can follow the story easily. Projected scenes set the stage for the story, © Muireann McCoyIs there parking and disabled access?Yes. There is free on-site parking at the Navan Centre, and the centre has disabled access and disabled toilet facilities. Because the show is indoors, you won't need to climb the grassy slopes of the fort itself. Why Navan Fort?Eamhain Mhacha is the legendary seat of the Ulster kings and the home of the Red Branch Knights in the Ulster Cycle of tales, and Cúchulainn's story is bound up with the place. For anyone interested in Irish mythology and folklore, and in what these old stories still say to us today, it's a fitting setting. The detailsCú Roí MacDara by Foinse Navan Centre, 81 Killylea Road, Armagh BT60 4LD Tuesday 27 October 2026. Country Comes to Town, Susan McCann and a 500th marathon: what's on in ABC this week

After the colour and crowds of Culture in the Park's biggest-ever weekend, things settle into something quieter — and quietly special — across Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon this week.Country Comes to Town returns to PortadownPortadown's biggest annual event is back on Saturday 20 September, when Country Comes to Town takes over the town centre for a full day of live country music, vintage vehicles, steam traction engines, street food and family entertainment. Now in its third decade, the festival typically draws upwards of 20,000 visitors and is supported by ABC Council. Country Comes to Town, Portadown, from a previous year's festival — © Henry Clark, licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 via Geograph IrelandThis year's full lineup hadn't been confirmed at the time of writing, but past headline acts have included Michael English, Robert Mizzell and John McNicholl — so expect a strong bill. Worth keeping an eye on the organisers' updates as the date gets closer.Mrs Bling's 500th marathonThe story to watch is a personal one. On Sunday 20 September, a runner known locally as "Mrs Bling" laces up at The Mall East in Armagh for her 500th marathon — yes, five hundred — complete with the special bling that's become her trademark. It's exactly the kind of local milestone that deserves a crowd on the finish line.Stargazing under the domeThat same Sunday, the sky gets its moment too. Armagh Observatory and Planetarium marks the autumn equinox with its Equinox Sound Journey Under the Stars, an immersive live sound experience beneath the dome, blending music with sweeping cosmic imagery — a genuinely different way to spend an evening in the city.Susan McCann at the Market Place TheatreMusic lovers have a date for the diary on Thursday 17 September, when Co Tyrone country star Susan McCann brings A Life in Music, Celebrating 50 Years to the Market Place Theatre — an amazing half a century on the road. Susan McCann performing at the Grand Opera House, Belfast, during last season's sell-out run — photo by Michelle Coey, courtesy of Dennis HeaneyOn show in BanbridgeOver in Banbridge, the Barbara Freeman retrospective continues at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery & Studio until 27 September, well worth a visit if you haven't caught it yet. Also worth a lookIf you fancy something a little different, the Armagh City Holistic and Psychic Health Fair pops up at the Armagh City Hotel on Sunday.Every week in ABCAs ever, the regulars keep the borough ticking along: Navan Fort's living history tours run daily through the week, the Scarva Band Stand continues its Sunday run through to the end of the month, and Portadown Farmers Market is open Friday and Saturday as usual at Millennium Court.Quieter than last week, maybe — but there's still plenty worth putting in the diary.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ENJOY DISCOVERING WHAT'S HAPPENING LOCALLY?Get The LivingABC Scoop — our free weekly guide to what's on, local favourites and community stories across Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon.━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
