Southern Trust's Ambitious Plan for a Greener Future
The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has unveiled its Sustainability Strategy for 2026-2030, dubbed ‘Care without Carbon’. This strategy aims to halve carbon emissions by 2030, aligning with the NI Climate Change Act. With a commitment to renewable practices and better resource management, the Trust is stepping into a leadership role in environmental health.
Why Sustainability Matters in Healthcare
Catherine Marks, the Trust’s Director of Finance, Procurement, and Estates, emphasized the link between environmental health and patient care. "Caring for people means caring for the environment that sustains their health and futures," she said. This interconnectedness highlights the role healthcare institutions play in fostering community well-being. By committing to a comprehensive green strategy, the Trust assures its patients and staff of a healthier, more responsible environment.
Key Focus Areas of the Strategy
Mark Bloomer, Assistant Director of Estates, outlined the six key areas of focus to achieve this ambitious target: Estates, Assets and Utilities, Travel and Transport, Waste Management, Carbon Emissions, Sustainable Procurement, and Greenspaces and Biodiversity. These areas represent every facet of the Trust's operations, reinforcing that sustainability is not merely an adjunct to existing practices but a core principle that governs them.
Building Green Spaces for Healthier Communities
A significant aspect of this strategy focuses on enhancing greenspaces around Trust facilities. This initiative serves dual purposes: improving the aesthetic appeal of healthcare locations and providing therapeutic environments for patients and staff. Green spaces have been shown to foster healing, mental well-being, and a sense of community, making them vital in modern healthcare.
Measuring Progress and Future Goals
To ensure accountability and demonstrate progress, the Trust will report its achievements annually. This commitment not only maintains transparency but also encourages continuous evaluation and improvement of practices. As they embark on this sustainable journey, the Southern Trust invites collaboration from staff, service users, and local communities—a united effort toward fostering a healthier planet and populace.
Join the Movement for a Sustainable Future
The Southern Trust’s innovative approach in embracing sustainability illustrates the growing recognition of its importance in healthcare. Through community engagement, ongoing education, and actionable steps, both staff and residents can work collectively towards a greener, healthier future.
